The Role and Aim

Higher education system is one of the most important systems in the modern society. But at the same time, it is confronted with many problems caused by such factors as growing demand for production of new fields of knowledge, explosing scale of higher education, changing characters of students, structural change of labor market.

For these problems, we should investigate higher education system, objectively and self-reflectively. But regrettably there are not sufficient numbers of institutes and researchers engaged in these important research topics in Japan. Rcus, established in 1986, is one of a few institutes and the second oldest one in Japanese national universities.

The aims of Rcus are such as to perform research on system, organization, structure of higher education as well as its contents and teaching methods, with scientific, inter-disciplinary, and policy-oriented manner, and then, to develop, examine, and present practical models for university reform in Japan.

Research Activities

We have performed several research projects as follows with many researchers at external institutes.

1. study on the responses of reserachers and organizations for the formation of new disciplines
2. study on the policy concerning locations of universities at changing demand for higher education
3. study on introductory physics education in universities
4. study on developments and changes of research function of universities
5. study on strategies for the new developments of University of Tsukuba

Publication: 'University Studies'

We have published 'University Studies' every year as academic journal. This Journal is edited in Japanese, but No.35(2007) is in English; Papers on the 3rd International Workshop on Reforms of Higher Education in Six Countries/Regions.
